My 655 has a slow oil leak from a hydralic line running from the HST transmission to the radiator? Looks like a cooling line for the oil. Also appears to be low pressure as the oil is not squirting all over the place. The line rubbed against a bolt head and developed a hole. I'm thinking of trying to repair with a section of gas line in place of about 4 in. of the existing line, and ty wrapped out of the way. Any ideas, or comments would be appreciated.

Ken,Take this with a grain of salt..But why would you want to mess around trying to seal & patch Rubber hose? Even extremely high pressure line is relatively inexpensive. Probably wouldn't even run you $10-$15 to replace the entire line. And wouldn't it be nice not to worry about your "repair" springing a leak....again? I don't like this idea either, but you could splice the line and insert a double ended barbed brass fitting. I do agree that you should wrap a piece of hosing around the area that rubbed, to keep this from happening again. ....

The original line is metal, not rubber. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'm thinking about substituting the fuel line in a short section of the metal line, and using hose clamps to secure it. ....

Sorry bout that Ken,First, if the wear area is from a factory bolt,(READ: poor design)wouldn't this be considered a warrenty issue in any way? Even if the unit isn't new, I would be on the phone with the local JD dealer, "Kindly" asking for a little satisfaction. Of course that doesn't always work either. For the do-it-yourself method you mentioned, I would be very careful not to overtighten the clamps, causing the line to crush. This can be very easy to do. Remember, this line was made to withstand fluid pressure, pushing outward, not inward. This can be easily proven by your ability to crush a fat radiator hose with two fingers, yet it holds outward under pressure. My quick and easy method would be to buy "seal a gasket", to be used as the actual sealant between the repair hose and the metal hydraulic line.Short of the mess involved to remove the metal line, to cut the line, install a brass union fitting, and clean any metal shavings. The second one...might be good to save as a winter project. If attempting the second choice, don't forget to measure the length before cuts. Length & angles of line need to remain the same after the fix. ....

My dad is looking for a backhoe attachment (7 1/2 foot)for a 4300 John Deere, preferable used but not abused.If anyone knows of one in southern Virginia or Northern North Carolina,please let us know.Thank You. ....

The tractor is an '87 model, long out of any sort of warranty. I will look seriously @ the seal a gasket method. Thanks for your input. ....
